SMART Board… What is so SMART about it? St. Edmund Parish School May 14, 2010 Susie Sweeney

What is a SMART board? A SMART board is an interactive white board that can be used to enhance instruction. Even though it looks like a regular white board, you CANNOT use regular white board markers on it. You can only use the stylus markers that come with the board.

Different ways to use a SMART Board… You can use it to view Internet websites and do whole class computer activities. You can highlight important information on websites. You can highlight, write on, and modify PowerPoint presentations and Word documents. You can also use the SMART notebook software to create your own lessons or use premade lessons!

What sorts of activities can be done on a SMART board? Brainstorming using graphic organizers Reinforcing skills by using online interactive websites Using highlighter tool to highlight nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Diagramming activities Teaching steps to a math problem Taking notes right on PowerPoint presentations Electronic Word Wall Use the built in maps to teach continents, oceans, countries, etc.

Things to know BEFORE using the SMART board There must be a pen in each tray for the board to work. You can only pick up one pen from the tray at a time. Be sure to match the pen colors with the pen color on the tray. Make sure you press firmly on the SMART Board. The SMART Board is pressure sensitive, and you may need to press slightly harder than you would on an ordinary whiteboard.

Things to know BEFORE using the SMART board For best results, write letters that are at least two inches high. The SMART Board is very durable, but sharp objects can scratch or cut the surface. Sharp writing instruments, such as ball point pens or fine-pointed pens, can damage the surface if enough pressure is applied.

ORIENTING the SMART board To ORIENT the BOARD, – On the laptop, look at the bottom toolbar on your desktop. – Use your mouse to RIGHT CLICK the white disk SMARTBOARD icon. – Click ORIENT. – Then touch each plus sign with your finger or with the pen. To ORIENT the BOARD using the Notebook software, – Click on the notebook icon on the left side. – Choose ORIENT from the Quickstart menu. – Then touch each plus sign with your finger or with the pen.

SMART BOARD Floating Toolbar Stop using other tools and return the mouse mode. Draw in digital ink, and select the ink color. Highlight an area of the screen with translucent ink for emphasis, and select the ink color.

SMART BOARD Floating Toolbar Erase digital ink, and select the size of the eraser. Draw a line, and select the format of the line. Draw a pre-formed shape, and select the shape.

SMART BOARD Floating Toolbar Make your next press on the SMART board a RIGHT click. Launch the on-screen keyboard. Launch the notebook software. Undo the previous action.

USING the SMART board To LEFT CLICK on the board, – Any press on the interactive white board is the same as a left click with a mouse. To RIGHT CLICK on the board, – Click on the RIGHT Click icon on the Floating toolbar. – The next click you make will be a right click.

USING the SMART board To ERASE on the BOARD, – Pick up the eraser, place it in your opposite hand, then use your hand to erase anything you've written. To ERASE a large area on the BOARD, – Circle and Tap Feature – Pick up the eraser, encircle the area you want to erase, and then tap in the middle of the area.

Digital Ink Layer You now have the ability to write on an invisible layer over whatever you have on the screen. You also have the ability to save anything you write.

Fun SMART board tricks! With younger children who have trouble dragging items, some teachers have provided students with a small xylophone mallet and found it to work successfully. It also helps with the shadow problem, allowing the students to better see what they're doing. Also, they can better reach the top area of boards with the extended length. Alternatively, Q-Tips work well to assist dragging!

More fun SMART board tricks! Two Finger Method – Put one finger on the object you want to move. Keep that finger on the object and touch the whiteboard with the other hand in the location you want to move the object. Then, remove the finger that was originally touching the object. You should see the object zoom to where the other finger is placed! – (Left hand touch object, right hand touch destination, left hand let go, right hand let go.)

Where do we go from here… You can use the SMART board when exploring other websites. You can download pre-made SMART notebook software files from the Internet to use. You can use the pre-designed templates in the Notebook software. You can create your own notebook files. Go to
