Welcome Day Ambassador Training March 28-29, 2012

Mission of the CSLD The Center for Student Leadership Development has a two pronged mission: To engage in research and assessment in order to contribute to the field of leadership studies. To provide developmental opportunities for students to become informed, inclusive, and effective leaders in their careers, communities, and family lives.

Credibility What makes you credible to prospective students? Why are we asking you to talk to prospective students?

Purpose of the Welcome Days To inform prospective students of what URI has to offer To “sell” the CSLD to prospective students as an amazing resource that URI has to offer

Why URI? Very common question from prospective students How would you answer this question? What makes URI stand out?

Important! You are not here to talk about the food, the dorms, or anything else not related to Leadership Studies! Everything you say reflects back on the CSLD

Why Leadership? Why are you minoring in Leadership Studies? What experiences have you had with the CSLD that made you choose leadership studies?

Experiences within the CSLD Leadership Institute HDF 190 Challenge Course Facilitator Training MLK Day What other experiences have you had?

What problems can you see that might arise?

Situation 1 A student and a parent approach you. You begin to tell the student about leadership, but the student immediately cuts you off and starts asking about general campus life (dining halls, dorms, etc.) How do you handle the situation?

Situation 2 A parent and student approach you and begins to ask questions about the minor. Once you begin talking, the parent cuts you off and begins to tell you about all of the exceptional things the student did in high school. How do you continue your explanation of the minor?

Situation 3 A student approaches you with their parents, and the parents do all of the talking, while the student quietly stands by. How do you engage the shy student to give them insight into the minor?

At the Welcome Day… Live applications will be available Have prospective students mention your name in their essay! Talk to students, let Robert/Jeff talk to the parents!

Potential Outcomes! 11, 80, 99, 113, 115, 117, 103, 89
