Nutrition Chapter One Mr. Richey’s 6 th Grade Class

The Food Pyramid

Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta Group 6-11 Servings per day You need these daily servings because they provide energy and are needed for daily activity. Types of food: whole grain bread, Cheerios, Wheaties, whole grain pasta

Vegetables 3-5 servings per day Low in fat, high in fiber!! Lots of vitamins Types of vegetables: carrots, cucumbers, green beans, lettuce, broccoli

Fruits 3-5 servings per day Contains Vitamin C Good to eat and nice and sweet! Types of fruit: watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, oranges, apples

The Dairy Group 2-3 servings per day Proteins, vitamins, and minerals, especially calcium Helps make strong bones Examples include: cottage cheese, low fat milk and cheeses, low fat yogurt

Meat, Poultry, Fish, Dry Beans, Eggs, and Nuts 2-3 servings per day Contains protein, iron, and zinc Avoid frying food and eat nuts in small amounts because they are high in fat!! Examples: peanut butter, lean meat, peas, eggs, salmon

Fats, Oils and Sweets Eat in small amounts High in fat, calories, and sugar Too much is not good for your body Examples: salad dressings, butter, creams, candy, soda
