 Roving Reference  E-Books and Mobile devices  LibraryThing w While Reference Desks offer a permanent location for patrons to find a librarian, Roving Reference Librarians help those not inclined to approach the desk. Those patrons are the Anxious Patron and the Millennial Patron

 Who are the Anxious? › Embarrassed › Worried › “Strange burden of shame”  Barriers for patrons with library anxiety › Physical › Mechanical › Emotional  Roving librarians break down these barriers › Studies show….

 Who are Millennials?  Special  Team Oriented  Nomadic  Technology Veterans  How do Roving librarians help Millennials? › Roving allows librarians to customize information seeking experience to the patron › Helps patrons find reliable and accurate information › Millennials like teamwork, so a librarian fills that need › Librarians can be available via chat, text, and other sources.

 What is it?  How does it help the reference Librarian help the library patron? › Information can be found instantly and in one place › Rarely used books can be digitized, thus opening up shelf space and keeping the information available › Good instructional tool for librarian to use for teaching about reference technology skills › Can be used in conjunction with physical materials › Allows patrons to be self-sufficient › Patrons can access information from home

 What is it? › LibraryThing is a social cataloging web application for storing and sharing personal library catalogs and book lists. › Based in Portland, Maine, LibraryThing was developed by Tim Spalding and went live on August 29, As of September 2009 it has 920,000 users and nearly 45 million books catalogued.  What does it do? › Keep track of books you own, you’ve read, you want to read › Catalog your books with information imported from over 680 libraries, including the Library of Congress, the British Library, and other renowned libraries. › Tag books (and use other’s tags)

 What else? › Post and read reviews by other thingamabrarians (users) › Get recommendations for books via the “suggester” feature › Share on the forum › Participate in the Early Reviewers program › See what your friends are reading  How will this help the reference librarian help the library patron? › Resource for book recommendations and reviews › Forum can put patron in contact with readers who can answer any questions
