2 Country Context Low rural electrification levels – 3% High dependence on biomass technologies – 93% Projects – ERT Programme already in progress covering 10 districts for each line ministry Proposed projects will add to the efforts already being undertaken

3 Project Ideas 1.National Project for provision of energy services to Institutions and households in rural areas (6.5M Euros) –Reduce indoor air pollution through dissemination of improved cooking technologies to households and institutions –Improve health services delivery through increased access to modern energy & ICT –Improve quality of education in rural areas through improved access to energy & ICT –Provide safe water, improved sanitation and enhance environmental sustainability –Note: All forms of technology will be used as long as they are cost effective –Key Players: rural households, schools, health centers, Min. of energy, min. of finance, min of education, health, water, NGOs, Private Sector –Duration: 3 years

4 Project Ideas 2.A programme for the provision of energy for income generating activities in rural areas(10M Euros) –To provide energy to rural enterprises to enhance productivity and increase incomes (mini/micro hydro, solar dryers, treadle pumps, PV/wind water pumping) –To create employment through emerging enterprises –Key Players: Min. of Energy, Ministry of Trade & Industry, small enterprises, rural agro-processing industries, energy suppliers, Min of Finance, Private Sector –Duration: 3 years

5 Project Ideas 3.Programme for extension of the grid to rural industries/productive enterprises (10M Euros) –To connect productive enterprises to the central grid to enhance their production capacity –To create employment to the rural communities near enterprises connected to the grid –Key Players: Min of energy, rural industries, Private Sector Foundation, rural energy providers, SMEs, REA –Duration: 3 years
