SLAVERY READINGS

Our next unit… THE CIVIL WAR

Would you win Civil War Cash Cab!?!?

CIVIL Cash Cab Questions… 1. Who fought against who? 2. What years did the C.War take place? 3. Who is the most famous President from the C. War? 4. Can you name a battle? 5. What was a cause of the Civil war? North vs. South Abe Lincoln Sectionalism, Preserve the Union, States Rights, Slavery

THE START OF THE CIVIL WAR: SECTIONALISM & SLAVERY

What leads the North & South to fight each other in the Bloodiest War in US History? More Americans die in the Civil war than all the wars combined! S E C T I O N A L I S M

WHAT IS “SECTIONALISM”? Having pride in your “section” Aka: South LOVES South North LOVES North # 1 Cause of the Civil War

A bitter rivalry develops…

NORTH vs SOUTH 1. Tons of Factories 2. Tons of RR 3. Big Cities 4.Telegraph wires increase communication 5. Poor whites (immigrants) scared Slaves will take their jobs so they don’t like slavery! 1. Mostly farmland 2. Small cities/towns 3. Few Factories 4. Use rivers to transport goods 5. Very few immigrants – they depend on slaves to get work done.

SECTIONALISM at it’s finest Well, I HATE you too, Stupid Southerner ! I HATE Yankees! Industria l losers! BUZZ

So, the South thinks they are clearly better… this invention makes it worse! Before the cotton gin 1 slave + 10 hrs = 1lb of cotton After cotton gin 1worker + 10 hr = 1000 lbs cotton COTTON GIN! Eli Whitney Cotton was not profitable before… Now it is! Southern guys can now make even MORE $ if they have more slaves!

DUH! Cotton production increased PS: so did slave use! By 1860… 1 out of 7 people are slaves! 4 million!

Rather than moving away from slavery, the South became more dependent on it.

True or False: 7 out of 10 people in the South did NOT own slaves.

TRUE!!! % of S. White Families Owning Slaves in 1860 About 1,150,000 Families owned no slaves

Then why did so many people support slavery? It was known as the peculiar institution. *People didn’t necessarily want it or love it, but they depended on it for their economy “Slavery is like holding a Wolf by the ears, you don’t like it, but you don’t dare let go”

PEOPLE AGAINST SLAVERY… 1.Abolitionists – “save the slaves” 2.Slaves – “save me” PEOPLE FOR SLAVERY … 1.South. Guys – “save my money” 2.Immigrants – “save my job!”

Live footage…. For real! Pay close attention & check out these crazy pics!

What do you know now?!? 1.What are the differences between the North & South Called? 2. Name 3 differences btwn the N & S. 3.What causes slavery to become profitable? 4. Who invented it? 5.Who is against slavery & why? 6. Who’s for it? SECTIONALISM Industrial/farming, slaves/no slaves, close/far, hot/cold, immigrants/no imm. Cotton gin Eli Whitney Abolitionists, Slaves Rich Southern guys, Immigrants

FOR WED: …Slavery Reading Qs…

Do you think they got why the country starts to head toward Civil War? Uhhhh, I don’t know. By the looks of their faces, its hard to tell Let’s Quiz ‘em and Find out! That’s a darn fine idea!

I need them! Don’t y’all Yankee’s take them away! I don’t want your life! I want my Peculiar Institution! They’re a 10! Don’t you agree George…

For you non-Southerners that means… We’re doing a good thang here! You can thank me later!
