2  Election of Abraham Lincoln  Slavery  States’ rights

3  The act of 1854 let the states decide if they wanted to be a free state or slave state.

4  States’ rights- the idea that states have the right to limit the power of the federal government  Secede- withdraw from the union  Abolitionist- a person who wanted to end slavery  Vigilante- are people who take the law into their own hands

5  When the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina marked the beginning of the Civil War.  This event happened on the date of April 12,1861.

6  Disadvantages- had fewer men to fight in war.  Fewer railroads to transport troops and supplies.  Advantages- knew the land better than the Union.  Better generals and marksmen.

7  Disadvantages- Soldiers were not trained as well.  Fighting on unfamiliar land  Advantages- had all the factories/industries  More soldiers for fighting

11  Southern states had to meet some conditions before reentering the Union. o End slavery o Declare secession illegal o All adult males had to take an oath of loyalty to the U.S.  After the states met these terms they could govern themselves again.

12  Southern states became a one crop economy.(Cotton)  To get the seeds out they used a cotton gin invented by Eli Whitney.  The northern economy had more industries.

14  The people in the south thought that the states should control themselves.  They thought the federal government shouldn’t have the right to make decisions about the states’ issues.

15  Reconstruction began in the south in 1867  Reconstruction refers to the federal governments’ plans to restore the south to the Union.
