2 Main Idea During the early 1800s, the South developed an economy based on agriculture.

3 Eli Whitney Whitney is a teacher and inventor.
1793: creates the cotton gin Cotton gin makes it possible to quickly separate cotton from the plant

4 Industrial Revolution
Industrial revolution created a demand for cotton. Cotton production in the south increased. Cotton is harvested and sent to factories in the North and Europe to be made into clothes.

5 Slavery Slavery had existed in US since colonial times.
By 1800, slavery was slowly dying out. Most whites agree that it is immoral.

6 Cotton Increases Slavery
Cotton Gin + Industrial Revolution = Need for labor Southern farmers fill the need for cheap labor by increasing number of slaves.

7 Cotton Plantations Cotton plantations stretch from Virginia to Texas.
Southerners become dependent on slave labor.

8 North v. South Industry Immigration Roads, canals, Railroads Urban
Strong national government Nationalism Favored tariffs Agriculture Slavery Steamboats, Rivers Rural States’ rights Sectionalism Hated tariffs
