What is the least expensive way to ships goods around the world? By Ship!

How has the USA and Canada managed to be so successful when moving goods by ship throughout the country? Human Environment Interaction – We have modified the environment to meet our transportation needs using technology. Niagara Falls kept ships from passing between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. We built the Welland Canal that allowed ship to go around the falls.

The first major canal route in the USA was the Erie Canal, connecting Lake Erie with the Atlantic Ocean, by way of the Hudson River and NYC. N.Y.C,

Welland canal How “locks” work.

Opening in 1956, the St. Lawrence Seaway is one of the world’s largest shipping routes. Connecting London and world shipping to the interior of the USA.

Duluth, MN Ships can travel from all over the world to as far as Duluth, MN.

Today, a system of locks and canals allow ships to travel from ports around the world in to the “heartland” of the USA and Canada. Note how the locks operate to raise and lower ships.

Which of the Five Themes of Geography would be applicable to the St. Lawrence Seaway? Human Environment Interaction Movement Region Place Relative location
