Research needs YOU.. Focus on our community, the MUSC community We have the ideal audience at our fingertips- EACH OTHER! We can spread awareness and excitement about the many research activities that extend beyond our day-to-day work – Become a co-promoter and research awareness will increase We can, and should be, the participants helping to push research forward – If you do not want to sign up for a study, why should others sign up for your study or use your services? Celebrate how we are “Changing What’s Possible” through ongoing research

Who are our faces of research? PIs, physicians, nurses, researchers, program staff, patients and their families, MUSC staff PIs and study staff spreading awareness about their studies and health issues Research support on campus such as the IRB, ORSP, and the Hollings Clinical Trials Office Departments and Programs such as the Center for Community Health Partnerships

Can you explain… SCresearch.org Expo increases awareness of both general and study-specific research (co-promotion!) energizes MUSC staff, patients, and public to partner with research as study participants celebrates research study volunteers as partners SCTR (the Expo sponsor) MUSC South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research Institute – supports all research at MUSC SCresearch.org Website South Carolina Research Studies Directory

Promote!

SCTR Research Nexus

Sales 101: You are “on” from 10:00am-2:00pm You represent you, your study, and MUSC Be enthusiastic and draw people to you Stay both verbally AND nonverbally engaged

Sales 101: Talk them in... Engage them STAND in front of your table if possible... Is there something of interest on your table to “lure” them over? Ask questions: “Have you ever heard about.. (vein circulation problems, irritable bowel syndrome)” or “Is there a particular study you’re interested in?” Can I help you find something? Do you have any questions about research? Have you even been in a research study? Here at MUSC? Have an elevator pitch ready to concisely explain your trial

Promotion What do you think they will remember after 3 min at your table? Engage them with visuals & interactive activities – Puzzle piece engagement Dialogue is more important than handouts

General Tips & Reminders We will provide tables, chairs and table clothes Less is best; give out one or two simple handouts, a card type is best (remember IRB approval) Wear your ID badge, a large name tag is also helpful Props attract people to your table (make them curious to see what you have) People like “SWAG” (pens, etc.) – have your study contact information on EVERYTHING Secure your handouts (paper weights, tape, etc.) Apply sunscreen and bring water, if desired

Have fun!
