The Fall of the Roman Empire Standard 7.1

WHY DID THE ROMAN EMPIRE FALL?

REASON # 1 - SIZE The empire was too large (You can’t rule what you can’t see).

REASON #2 – INVASIONS! Germanic warriors called Barbarians attacked Rome’s northern borders. At the same time, Persian armies invaded in the east.

REASON #3 – NOT ENOUGH MEN! Because so many Romans were needed in the army, not enough people were left to farm.

Roman men were needed in the army and not enough people were left to farm. No farming Lack of food Starvation.

REASON #4 – GERMANIC FARMERS Germanic farmers were invited to farm. They started their own communities. They had their own leaders and ignored the emperors, which caused problems.

REASON #5 - DISEASE Disease swept through the empire, killing many people.

REASON #6 – TAXES! The government increased taxes to pay for the defense of the empire.

DIOCLETIAN – DIVISION OF THE EMPIRE Diocletian divided the empire in two. Diocletian ruled the eastern half. Ask yourself…why would he have divided the empire in two?

CONSTANTINE – REUNITES THE EMPIRE Reunites the two Roman halves. Relocates the capital city to what is now Turkey. He names the city Constantinople.

Barbarians began to invade the territories of the Roman Empire.

Barbarian Invasions Many barbarian groups attacked Roman territories. - Franks (Clovis) - Goths - Saxons - Huns (Attila)

LOOK AT THE MAP ON PAGE 32. Which group invaded Italy before moving on to Spain?

Who was Atilla the Hun? Atilla was the leader of the Huns. He raided Roman territory in the east. He was a brilliant leader and a very scary enemy. “He was a man born into the world to shake the nations, the scourge of all lands, who in some way terrified all mankind by the dreadful rumors noised about concerning him.”

THE BEGINNING OF THE END The Empire did not have good Emperors. The great Roman army became weak and small. Poor people had no jobs and became frustrated with the government.

The Roman Empire did not have enough money. Disease swept through the empire. Corruption became widespread in Rome’s government. (Bribery, threats, decay of values).

Civil War broke out between the Roman provinces.

THE END… Rich citizens abandoned Rome. City life was harder for those left behind. Population decreased. Schools closed. Taxes and prices went up. People became poor. The empire collapsed.
