3 Hard times hit… Trade disrupted by invasions & civil war
Limited resources Rising inflation Limited farming technology Decreased loyalty of the army No one wanted to serve in govt.

4 Thought to have played a part in the murder of 3 emperors
DIOCLETIAN Thought to have played a part in the murder of 3 emperors Restored some of the wealth and power to the Empire Doubled the size of the army Divided the empire into its eastern and western halves Retired in 305 A.D. which led to an outbreak of civil wars (Ruled from 284 – 305)

constantine Won the civil wars plaguing the region and thereafter reunited the Roman Empire Built a new capital for the Empire in the east and called it Constantinople (considered the first Christian emperor) (ruled from AD)

7 Germanic invasions Many Germanic tribes were forced out of their traditional homelands by the Huns Some of these groups settled in the outskirts of the Empire’s territory Others decided to attack the Romans In 410, Alaric led the Visigoths to sack Rome In 452, Attila led the Huns against Rome

8 attila The Romans called him the “Scourge of God”
The Pope convinced him not to attack Rome in 452. Died of a nosebleed on his wedding night after he passed out from drinking too much.

10 Final fall of rome In 476, the last Roman Emperor, Romulus Augustulus, is deposed by the barbarian Odoacer. The eastern portion of the empire will continue as the Byzantine Empire. It will prosper for another 1000 years.
