Unit: The Cold War Topic: Latin America

1. Central America

A. The Somoza family ruled Nicaragua from 1936 to 1979.

B. Because they were anti-Communist, they had U.S. support, but were not good rulers.

C. The Sandinistas, a Communist revolutionary group, overthrew the Somoza family in 1979.

D. A civil war began between the Sandinistas and the Contras, who were not Communist.

E. Fearing that Nicaragua would become Communist, the U.S. supported the Contras with illegal money obtained from selling arms to Iran.

2. Civil War Effects

A. The civil war failed to get rid of the Sandinistas. B. However, the war ended and in 1990, Violeta Chamorro was elected President of Nicaragua. C. The Sandinistas peacefully handed over power.
