Magnetic Mitigation - Contents l Magnetic Mitigation General l West Wall Compressors l Rack Room 2 l Magnetic Shielding Yoke Jason Tarrant – Integration Engineering

Magnetic Mitigation - General l Parallel approach l Baseline [UK led] l Remove / Shield Equipment in Areas of High Risk (compressor move, external rack room & local shielding) l Parallel option [US led] l Single ‘yoke’ solution l Requires some UK resource K Marinov H Witte P Smith

Magnetic Mitigation - General l Validation of Analysis l AFC Filed Mapping in R9 l Opera Modelling l Compare Measurements & Modelling l Including penetration of field into cabinets I Taylor, C Pidcott, M George

West Wall Compressor Move l Why  Compressor location under south mezzanine in high magnetic field  Length limit of ~30m on He hoses (compressor to cold heads) so unable to place outside MICE Hall  West wall relatively uncluttered + opportunity to build mezzanine platform V Bayliss l Requirements  ~30m hose lengths  Platform to support compressors, personnel etc.  Safe personnel access  Compressor handling & installation  Equipment delivery & assembly space for MICE experimental devices

Existing West Wall Existing high power cable to be moved 4 PPS system trunking West wall mezzanine will be at this level between the existing services Services to be moved or bridged by the west mezzanine

Platform, Compressor & Services West Wall Mezzanine Perforated flooring for thermal management < 30m Hoses 19 Compressors for Step IV + 12 for Steps V & VI in stands Air-con Move Cable trays for compressor hoses & power cables from ground floor compressors Cable trays for compressor hoses & power cables from first floor compressors Hose and cable tidy along south mezzanine corridor Control Rack

West Wall Compressor Move l What (Completion Date)  Distribution board move (March 2013)  Design, structural engineering and approval (May 2013)  South west air-con & supply services (June 2013)  Auxiliary equipment crane move (June 2013)  Mezzanine platform build on west wall of MICE Hall (Sep 2013)  Water services, including water plant relocation (Sep 2013)  Services installation & management (Jan 2014)  Some related infrastructure changes(Jan 2014) Lighting PPS Power cables  Compressor stands with integrated power (Feb 2014)  Compressor & services installation (April 2014)

West Wall Compressor Move l When Ready for Running April 2014

RR2 l Why  Same magnetic field problem as compressors but longer services length, therefore move out of Hall to new Rack Room 2 (RR2)  Allows operational changes without breaking PPS or disrupting running l Requirements  Capacity in RR2 to eventually house all racks for Step VI  Minimal change to building (cost related + will be returned to ISIS)  Fire safe, including services runs  Safe access to racks  Manage climate: Thermally for RR2

RR2 & MLCR Reconfiguration Existing Rack Room New Rack Room RR2 MLCR Cables Routed Under Stairwell & False Floor Luke Fry / February 2013

RR2 l What (Completion Date)  Asbestos removal work (May 2013)  Design, structural engineering & approval (July 2013)  Cable ways through walls and cable management (Aug 2013)  Building (doors, apertures, walls) (Nov 2013)  Air management & temperature control (Jan 2014)  Install services, power distribution & electrical (Jan 2014)  False Flooring (rack room and main walkway) & cable trays (March 2014)  Rack installation (May 2014)

RR2 l When Ready for Running 09 th May 2014

Magnetic Shielding Yoke l Why  Apart from compressors & racks above many other components and systems in proximity of Step IV MICE experimental devices that could malfunction in the level of magnetic field that will be produced. l Requirements  Magnetic shielding yoke that sufficiently lowers the level of the magnetic field to enable safe operation of the experimental devices and the infrastructure of the MICE Hall, as well as protecting the ISIS control room.  Compatible with the MICE Hall environment, MICE experimental devices, services, maintenance etc.

Magnetic Shielding Yoke Integrated with Step IV Devices Brookhaven Yoke Design Integrated into the MICE Hall

Magnetic Shielding Yoke l Design Iteration Fit with Experimental Devices Fit with Hall Flooring & Trench Fit with South Mezz Platform & Tracker Cryo Fit with Detectors Fit with Services Modifications required to current yoke design and the MICE Hall

Magnetic Shielding Yoke l What (UK)  Change front of south mezzanine to fit around yoke  Reconfigure & extend on-device services connections, thus compatible with reduced access when yoke installed  Reconfigure cold head hoses & power, vacuum lines and magnet cables & their management to fit with yoke  Move Tracker Cryo & extend waveguides if necessary (waveguide = US purchase)  Move hydrogen filling station ( either yoke or tracker shield )  Provide modifications for lower yoke columns into trench and floor on north side, requires significant modifications to false flooring and trench roof  What (US)  Supply Step IV yoke  Min 1x installation representative

Magnetic Shielding Yoke l When  JT Looking at all ‘environmental’ issues as shown on slide 15.  Steve Plate (BNL Designer) visiting Mid August to discuss these and understand the issues in the context of a Hall visit and with face to face meeting.  Decision point identified 30Sep13:  External review of baseline and yoke option  Would allow fabrication of yoke parts to start in US FY 14

Magnetic Shielding Yoke l When Ready for 17 th October 2014
