Welcome to First Grade!

Welcome to First Grade!  We will introduce you to first grade and to our curriculum.  If you have any questions during our presentation please write them down and hold on to them until we break out into our individual classrooms. .

All About Our Team  Our experience teaching  We have 70 years of teaching experience.  We have 58 years teaching in First Grade.  We have 50 years teaching at MV.

Our Goals  To give your child the academic knowledge and skills they need to progress to second grade.  To provide a supportive, warm, and fun classroom environment.  To help your child grow socially, make new friends, and discover new interests.

Class Subjects The subjects we cover during first grade are:  Reading  Math  Health  Writing  Technology  Social Studies  Science

Reading  Reading Groups based on ability  Whole Group instruction in Harcourt Trophies Basal Reader  Big Books, Books on tape, Poetry, Fiction and non-fiction selections

Common Core Standards (AZ College and Career Readiness Standards) for Language Arts  Reading Standards for Literature  Reading Standards for Informational Text  Reading Standards for Foundational Skills  Writing Standards  Language Standards  Speaking and Listening Standards

Writing  Write From the Beginning (Informative, Narrative, and Opinion)  Writer’s Workshop~ a very fun and relaxing way to learn to write and enjoy their work through celebrations.

Math Resources  Investigations ~ a very hands on way of teaching math through exploration and problem solving. We will make real life connections as to why and where we would use math.  District Approved Resources

Homework Your child has a binder/folder that should be coming home nightly and needs to return each day. Please make sure that you and your student go through this folder nightly. Homework may include  Reading  Math games/DreamBox  Additional support based on student needs

Grading Grades are based on the following:  Teacher observation  Written work  Dialogue Report Cards:  4 times  Proficient, Developing, Area of Concern

School Wide Buzz!  Be Safe  Be Respectful  Be Responsible  Honey Drop Rewards

Parent Drop off Please drop off between the cross walks. Pull up as far as possible. Do not let your students out before the crosswalk. If you pull into the lot and park, please walk your student across the crosswalk. Please be patient when waiting to pull into the lot. There is only one line of traffic that is pulling in from the street. Students should be ready to exit the car when the time is appropriate.

Parent Pick-up  Please have the Blue sign with your students first and last name, and grade level displayed in the windshield or hanging from the visor.
