Presentation transcript:

BY: HOPE RHINEHART Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)

Types of HSV HSV-1: this type of herpes is the main cause of herpes infections on the mouth and lips. (cold sores, blisters, ect.) It is passed through kissing, drinking, or eating after someone who has HSV-1. HSV-2: this type of herpes that you show blisters in the genital areas. Type 2 is passed through sexual contact who has HSV-2.

Causes HSV-1 Spread through saliva (kissing, using the same eating utensils) Sharing personal items (razors) Receiving oral sex from someone who has the HSV-1 HSV-2 Sexually transmitted.

HSV Signs and Symptoms HSV-1 Small, painful blisters filled with fluid around the lips. Tingling or burning around the mouth or nose. (few days before blisters appear) Fever Sore throat Swollen lymph nodes in neck. HSV-2 Tingling sensation in the genitalia, buttocks, and thighs. Small red blisters/open sores on the genitals or inner thigh. (often occur inside the vagina for women) May be painful Vaginal discharge (in women) Fever Muscles aches Painful urination Swollen lymph glands in groin.

HSV Type 1 and 2 Must get into the body through broken skin/mucous membrane. (inside the mouth/in the genital area.) Can be carried in bodily fluids. (saliva, seman, and fluid in the female genital tract.) May cause genital infections. Can be contagious even if the infected person does not have active symptoms.

HSV Treatment, Cures, and Prevention There are no cures for herpes. Antiviral medications may help shorten the length of an outbreak and help reduce the amount of reoccurring outbreaks. For HSV-2 2 types of therapy-  Episodic: you take medication at the first sign of an outbreak and for several days to shorten the length or prevent a full outbreak.  Suppressive: you may take medication daily to keep outbreaks from happening.

The two pictures at the top shows blisters and cold sores on the tongue and lips, this is an example of HSV-1. The bottom picture shows the sores on the penis and vagina, this is an example of HSV- 2.
