Descriptive Essay Peer Edit Take out both copies of your rough draft, grab a post it, and find a partner for editing! You need to be sitting together! “Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s.” ― Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

“I love writing. I love the swirl and swing of words as they tangle with human emotions.” ― James A. Michener On your post it write down the 1 element of this paper that you really need help with! This is the item that your partner will focus on!

Things that frustrate you about peer editing...  Making sure the feedback applies to my paper, instead of just someone writing good job!  When people aren’t brutally honest.  My peer might make mistakes, or I will make mistakes.  Don't always trust peer editing to find all of my mistakes.  I do not like when people don't take it seriously.  I might think something sounds really good, but my peer edit doesn't and I am forced to change it.  Hurting people's feelings  I don't like my peers seeing my writing when it's about a personal topic.  I can't edit well. “One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple.” ― Jack Kerouac

What benefits do you see in peer editing?  It allows my work to have a new set of eyes look over it and pick out problem areas.  It's great constructive criticism and I love hearing the feedback my classmates give me.  Mistakes could be caught that you didn't catch and other people’s viewpoints can improve your writing style.  When I do get real criticism on my work, it really helps me improve my piece and steer me in the right direction, even when it's little things like grammar.  I like to hear the ideas and people’s opinions.  More brains to one paper. “A word after a word after a word is power.” ― Margaret Atwood

“My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.” ― Ernest Hemingway Second: The listener should answer the following questions ORALLY in a discussion with the WRITER: 1.In your own words, summarize the message of the essay. 2.In which sections do you feel the writing is most interesting and why? 3.Where do you feel the writing is least interesting and why? 4.What do you want to know more about? Third: (The following should be marked on the paper directly – both the writer and the listener need to make their own comments on their copy of the paper!) Identify a really good section or sentence in the essay and place a star in the margin and highlight. Identify one of the weaker sections or sentences and put an X in the margin and highlight. Identify two goals the writer should still keep in mind when revising. Be specific and write these at the end of the paper. Identify two strengths of the paper. Talk about the post it concern. First: Trade papers with your partner. Write your name on your partner’s paper so I know who made the comments. Share with your partner your post it concern so s/he can think about that throughout the process. One person reads his/her paper out loud. The listener should highlight “spots” to come back to and discuss as the reader reads.
