1 Peer Editing Take notes!

2 What is Constructive Criticism?
Providing feedback about areas that need improvement without criticizing the person. Feedback should be done in an analytical, kind way. DO NOT insult, attack, or disrespect your peers in any way!

3 Three Steps to Giving Peer Feedback:
Compliments! Starting out with something positive helps the author feel encouraged! Use phrases like, “My favorite part was _____ because _____.” Or, “I really liked the part where _______ because ________.” Be specific!

4 Three Steps to Giving Peer Feedback:
2. Suggestions! Point out areas that could be improved in terms of content, style, voice, and clarity. Use “I” statements and be specific! “You should make this more interesting” vs. “I think a detailed description of this character would help the reader picture him more clearly.”

5 Three Steps to Giving Peer Feedback:
3. Corrections! Mark spelling and grammar errors directly on the piece of writing. Use the proofreading marks discussed in class!

6 Practice – “Night” In groups, practice editing a student’s paper.
Put ALL your names on the paper! Choose someone to read the paper out loud, or take turns. After you read, discuss spelling and grammar errors and make corrections. Discuss something you liked about the paper and write a compliment. Discuss suggestions and use “I” statements and be specific to give constructive feedback.

7 Get out your “Show Don’t Tell” assignment!
Trade papers with another student. At the bottom of the other person’s paper, write your name. (Use a different color pen! Ask if you need one!) Read your partner’s paper, marking any grammar or spelling errors you see. Give a compliment! Mention something that you liked! You can write in the margins, at the end, or on the other side of the paper. Make suggestions! Remember to use “I” statements and be specific! When you’re done with the paper, hold it up. I’ll collect it and give it to another student. This way each author will have his or her paper edited by at least three other students.
