Types of Opportunities Basic (research) versus Applied (practice)

Research It’s a Process which often leads to a Product (outcome/result)

Common Elements Hypothesis and theory Independent and Dependent Variables Errors Descriptive and Experimental Methods Operationalize and Standardize Nothing is ever “absolute” in research

Question How is this relevant to both your personal and professional life?

How would people describe your personality? Persona = mask

Overview The psychodynamic approach – Sigmund Freud –How do the id, ego, and super ego affect your personality? –What are some of the forces that help you to deal with inner conflicts in your life? –Do you think that the psychosexual stages still play an important role in the development of the personality? Why or why not? The humanistic-existential approach sees personality as choice, holding the viewpoint that we tend to make or create our own personalities. –Using this approach, what does a person need to do to meet their human needs and self actualization of who they are? –How do we shape our lives around goals to be happy? How do we find meaning in life using this approach? The social-cognitive approach views personality in terms of how a person thinks about situations encountered in daily life and responds to them. –How would this approach describe your personality? –What role do the self and the environment play in this approach? –What role does perception play in how we view ourselves in this approach? –How do we find meaning in life?

Personality Defined  Personality is the set of psychological traits and mechanisms within the individual that is organized and relatively enduring and that influences his or her interactions with, and adaptations to, the environment (including the intrapsychic, physical, and social environment).

Personality “Characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and acting.” Four major perspectives on Personality Psychoanalytic - unconscious motivations Trait - specific dimensions of personality Humanistic - inner capacity for growth Social-Cognitive - influence of environment

Summary The research begins. You’ll find many of the things you learn from the course helpful in giving you insight not only to others but to yourself. The history of our lives will often reflect our personality development in psychology. Personality is the summation of who we are, psychologically We will explore many theories of personality development, such as next week we will explore psychoanalysis and Freud Be Ready, Open, Willing, and Engaging to learn.

What you input, you will receive… Be open and adaptable
