ONLINE SERVICES

DEFINITION An online service provider can for example be an internet service provider, a business, real time information, a government website, a download service, a virtual learning environment or an education website, entertainment and more.

ENTERTAINMENT Services like Netflix or Love film are online services which stream movies or TV shows to multiple devices that you can watch, but of course there is a fee. There is BBC iplayer where you can catch up with all the shows you missed in the last 30 days, or you can watch films and sport games. Also there is online gaming like Xbox where you can play against people all over the world and you can talk to them.

GOVERNMENT There are things you can do online that are to do with the government including a online tax returns service, grant services, revenue collection services.

REAL TIME INFORMATION Real time information is websites and apps that show you the up to date weather and news. An example of this is the Yahoo weather iPhone app, this shows you the current weather and predicted weather for the next few hours or the next few days. A real time news service is the Sky News website which provides up to date news 24/7 and has in depth news reports.

COMMERCE Commerce is money for example a online shops, businesses and online auctions e.g.. Ebay. Also, commerce can be online banking.

COMMUNICATION Communication services include, video calling (face time), social networking (Facebook), instant message (imessage) and . Video calling is where you call someone but you can see a actual moving image of them as if you are talking face to face, a business that provides this is Apple’s Face Time. Social networking is a big online business, the most used social network website is Facebook, on Facebook you can share photos and statuses, chat to friends online and more.

VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT A virtual learning environment, or learning platform, is an e-learning education system based on the web that models conventional in-person education by providing equivalent virtual access to classes, class content, tests, homework, grades, assessments, and other external resources. An example of a virtual learning environment is My Maths, a website used by school students who are set maths homework to do on the website. Also, you can revise and play games.

BUSINESS Online business can be business that can only be found online or a shop that you can actually go to but you can also reach it online. There are loads of examples of online businesses including
