Completing the Word Solve The following slide is a blank word solve table that you may copy into a file to complete your word solve assignments. Only complete the yellow boxes for now. When you are finished, ensure that the file is saved in you’re my documents folder. Plan how you will present the word to the class. Remember that you are not being asked to read the word solve chart to the class.

Dictionary Definition Read the entire definition. Copy down the part of speech, the appropriate definition in full. Break Word Down Into Parts Clap out the word OR use the dictionary‘s phonetic breakdown. Our Own Definition In your own words, define the word as it is used in the text. Include details that help you understand the word. Use In An Original Sentence Write the word as part of an original sentence that you create. Should be in the same form as it was used in the film. The Word….Write It Out ( spell it accurately) What This Word Is Not/Non- Examples Choose examples and non-examples of a concept, trend, idea, thing (things are harder!) How It Relates to the Movie Explain how this word is used and/or relates to the film. Related Words Other Forms of the Word Socio-Cultural Context How does this concept relate to the “world” shown to us in the film?

Use In An Original Sentence In being a successful debating team, the students of Wiley College were able to show people that their stereotypes about black people as unintelligent and uneducated were wrong. The Word….Write It Out Stereotype This Word Is Not/Non-Examples Stereotypes are not an individual’s personality traits. They are not based on knowing a person for who they are. They are not respectful of a person’s individuality. How It Relates to the Movie Stereotypes abound in The Great Debaters as all the groups are treated by others according to common stereotypes. In addition we see the main characters working toward breaking the stereotypes the mainstream has about black people. Related Words Stereotyping Stereotypical Stereotyped Stereotypically Socio-Cultural Context It appears that believing stereotypes and treating people accordingly was more socially accepted than it is today. Many stereotypes about black people were racist and led to systemic racism that was very dehumanizing.
