The 5 Themes of Geography A Method of Exploration

What Is Geography Includes Physical Resources and Distribution People and their relationship with the earth and its resources

Theme #1 Location Exact/Absolute Location Grid Latitude or Parallels –Measured N. or S. of 0 –0=Equator Longitude –Measure E. or W. of 0 –0=Prime Meridian

Finding Latitude The Center Latitude Line Running Through the Middle of the Earth is Referred to as the Equator. This line is marked as 0 degrees latitude Any line that lies North (above) this line is a North Latitude Any Line that lies South (below) this line is a South Latitude WHRHS is Near 41°N Latitude

Longitude The Line Running North and South Through the Center of the Globe is the Prime Meridian This line lies at 0° Longitude Any line lying West (left) of this line is a West Longitudinal Line Any line lying East (Right) of this line is a East Longitudinal Line WHRHS is near 74.5°W Longitude

Hemispheres The Equator and Prime Meridian Divide the Earth into Hemispheres.

Relative Location Location relative to surroundings. Examples: WHRHS is about thirty miles west of New York City. The Football Field is on the East side of the Building Room 256 is in the South Building on the 2 nd Floor

Theme#2 Place Physical and Human Characteristics. Landforms, Weather, Etc Plant and Animal Life (Flora and Fauna) People/culture

Theme #3 Human-Environment Interaction Interactions Between People and their Environment. People impact the environment The environment impacts the people

Theme #4 Movement Movement of people, goods and ideas Because of the growing interdependence of the world, it is important to look closely and the transmission of goods, people, and ideas. Trade Migration Communication
