3 1st Theme: Location Absolute location – position on the globe (latitude and longitude) Latitude – Lines running east and west Equator – 0 line of latitude running east and west Hemispheres – division of earth into sections Northern Hemisphere is north of the equator Southern Hemisphere is south of the equator

Prime Meridian – 0 degree line separating the eastern and western hemispheres

6 Continued… Relative Location – where something is located in relation to other places Physical characteristics – the physical qualities that describe a specific location Mountainous or flat Leafy tropical to baron desert Hot and humid or cold and dry

7 2nd -- Place Characteristics – area that can be described by what the place looks like Physical – physical features include: plants, climate, mountains, animals. No humans messing with the area. Human – Alterations caused by us: buildings, languages, governments, clothing, food.

10 3rd Theme Human-Environment Interaction – how humans interact with the surrounding environment Changes b/c humans changed environment. What are the pros/cons of those changes? How have people adapted to changes in their environment?

13 4th -- Movement Movement – How people, goods, ideas move from place to place place. People – wagon, horse, subway Goods – truck, boat, plane, + all the above. Ideas – communication media + all the above.

14 5th -- Region Areas that share common traits.
Physical – mountainous areas, deserts, climates, resources, vegetation Human – cultures, religions, industries, agriculture, cities

15 Formal regions are areas in which a certain characteristic is found throughout them.

16 Functional Region Functional regions consist of a central place and the surrounding places affected by it.
