The Lost Settlement of Roanoke K. Williams, PRES

In the 1500s, people in England wanted more land and money so they could be rich like people from Spain.

In the year 1587 a man from England sailed a ship to start a new place to live in America. The man, named Sir Walter Raleigh, and his friends landed on an island near North Carolina.

The people named the island Roanoke because of the Native Americans that already lived there.

Roanoke had lots of natural resources like fish, animals, fruits, and vegetables.

The Native Americans did not want to give the people from England food. The people needed many more supplies. They were hungry and thought they might have to fight the Native Americans.

Sir Walter Raleigh left to get supplies for the people. When he came back three years later, all the people and houses were gone!

There was only one clue about what might have happened. The word CROATOAN was carved into a gate.

Croatoan was another island near Roanoke. There was a bad storm, so Sir Walter Raleigh couldn’t go there.

No one knows what happened to the people. That is why Roanoke is called the lost colony.

We can learn a lot from primary or secondary sources of information. 2 1
