Update your table of contents Pg 29: D of I KNL 30: Explorers 31: D of I excerpts 32: D of I quiz & illus. notes 33: Ch. 2 worksheets 34&35: Roanoke & Jamestown

1. Why did people want to come to the New World? 2. Who was Sir Walter Raleigh? 3. Why is Roanoke called “The Lost Colony”? 4. What was The Virginia Company? 5. What struggles did Jamestown face? 6. What made Jamestown successful?

Today’s essential question:

 The first people to come to the New World wanted to get rich by finding gold and making money  Later these reasons would change (religious freedom, etc.)

 Sir Walter Raleigh was an adventurer and friend of Queen Elizabeth I of England  he sent scouts to North America to find a good place for a settlement  he decided on a place in North Carolina called Roanoke.

 100 men arrived in 1585, but left after a difficult winter  In 1587, he sent 91 men, 17 women and 9 children to try again at Roanoke.

 Their leader, John White, and his wife had the 1 st English baby born in America, Virginia Dare  White returned to England to get supplies but was not able to get back to Roanoke for 3 yrs.

 When he returned, he could not find any of the settlers  The only thing he could find was the word “Croatoan” carved into a tree  No one knows what happened to the settlers of Roanoke

 After the failure of Roanoke, the English were somewhat nervous to try again.  In the 1600s, England’s King James started to grant charters to merchants who wanted to create colonies in North America  He wanted to encourage settlements in the lands of North America.

 The Virginia Company was a joint stock company established with one of King James’ charters  A Joint-stock company is where people invest in the company in return for some of the company’s profits in the future.

 In April, 1607, they established a colony in Virginia that they called Jamestown.

 Making Jamestown successful was a very difficult task.  Many of the 144 settlers were not used to working hard and did not know how to farm http://www.preservationvirginia.org/re discovery/page.php?page_id=31

 The area had tons of mosquitoes  The land was swampy  They arrived during a drought  The water was not very clean (mostly because they let sewage run into it)

 Many of the settlers spent a lot of their time digging for gold and silver instead of planting and growing food.  Their relationship with the local Native Americans got bad; the Natives wouldn’t help them with food anymore  When winter arrived, many of them starved to death  This was called the “Starving Time”

 By spring, 1608, only 38 of the original 144 settlers were still alive.  But more settlers came….eventually, the settlement began to grow

 Captain John Smith: ◦ provided good leadership ◦ Forced settlers to work and farm ◦ He tried to work with the native Powhatan people Pick one to add to your notes

 John Rolfe: ◦ Began growing tobacco along the James River ◦ Married Pocahontas, improving relations with the Powhatan people Pick one to add to your notes

 Everyone had to work their own land  FREE land for anyone who could get there!  The colony began to prosper!

 In 1619, the Jamestown settlers created their own government called the “House of Burgesses”  They elected representatives to make laws  In 1624, the Virginia Company lost its charter; Jamestown became a royal colony belonging to King James

Today’s essential question :

 Look at the map on page 77 of the textbook. 1. What are the 5 colonies on this map? 2. What does the symbol that looks like a beaver represent? 3. What products did Massachusetts produce? 4. What colony was Maine a part of at this time?

 How does your personality affect the type of job you might be successful at?  Are there jobs you think might be a bad fir for you because of your personality? If so, what are they? Why do you think they are a bad fit?
