The resources they were looking for were probably natural resources. A natural resource is a material source of wealth, such as timber (or wood), fresh water, or a mineral deposit that occurs in a natural state and has economic value. It is not man made, but can be used for food, to build with, and trade or sell.

8. Why did Raleigh’s first colony fail? The colonist did not plant enough crops to support the colony. The Indians nearby got tired of providing the colonist with food. The colonist began to starve and a ship from England picked up the survivors.

9. What happened to the second colony? England became involved in a war with Spain and sent no ships to check on the colony for 3 years. When ships finally did arrive, there was no sign of life in the colony. The only clue was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree.
