1.Figure out your topic. 2. Look in your books and online for evidence (facts, statistics, quotes, definitions, expert opinions, ect.) Write evidence down and remember to cite them for your works cited page. 3.Write a claim (1 st part of thesis).

Write a persuasive paragraph about how something should be changed in our school, city or state. Use compare/contrast and a superlative.

Argumentative Thesis Statements your claim or assertion the reasons that support this claim the order in which you will be presenting your reasons

Claims are statements about what is true or good or about what should be done or believed. Claims are potentially arguable. “Abortion is a harmful practice" "I don't like abortion" “Recycling is cool" “We must start recycling"

Pick a topic that you have a strong opinion on. Common claims: (action statement) “The government must...” “We should stop...” “The schools need….” (fact statement) “X is a harmful practice...” “Global warming is real…” (belief statement) “X is wrong/right…”

Reasons are statements of support for claims, making those claims something more than mere assertions. Reasons are statements in an argument that pass two tests: Come after the word “because” "Why do you say that?" "What reason can you give me to believe that?"

Once you find evidence in book, start formulating your reasons. Reasons support your claim (what you want to persuade us of) Global warming is happening [claim] because the most reputable science points in that direction [ 1 reason]. Everyone should stop wearing seat belts [claim] because it would save lives [1 reason]

Evidence serves as support for the reasons you offer and helps compel audiences to accept your claims. Evidence is personal examples, testimonials, statistics, facts, definitions, expert opinions, quotations
