Persuade—to advise or urge; to present an argument in a pleasing manner Transitions-words or phrases that connect ideas, details, or events in writing Quote-to repeat a passage or phrase from a book or speech; to cite, offer, or bring forward as evidence or support. Commentary—explanation of the way the facts, details, and/or examples in a paragraph or essay support the topic

2 Primary source—An original document containing firsthand information about a subject
Secondary source—Discussion about a primary source; offers an interpretation of information gathered from primary sources Precise language---(your choice of words/diction) should include academic vocabulary and literary terms you are learning on the topic Credibility—the quality of being trusted or believed

3 Warm up 2: Topic sentence-a sentence that states the main idea of a paragraph; in an essay, it also makes a point that supports the thesis statement Thesis statement-a sentence, in the introduction of an essay, that states the writer’s position or opinion on the topic of the essay. Textual evidence—quotations, summaries, or paraphrases from text passages to support a position Conclusion—the ending of a paragraph or essay; brings a sense of closure to the essay and leaves an impression with the reader

4 Argument—Facts or reasoning offered to support a position as being true
Claim-a position statement (or thesis) that asserts an idea or makes an argument Counterclaim (counterargument)—reasoning or facts given in opposition to an argument Valid---believable or truthful Reasons----the points or opinions the writer gives to show why the claim should be accepted. Evidence----a more specific type of support that usually draws from quotes or a primary or secondary source.
