In formal writing and speaking, an argument is a claim supported by reasons and evidence.
Sound arguments appeal to logic, not to emotion.

A claim is the writer’s position on a problem or an issue.

A claim is a persuasive paper/speech’s thesis statement. It is what your paper or speech is about and your stance on the topic.
