Question 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Mainstream film and independent film - thrillers Mainstream Films  Medium -Big budget  Big stars – well known  Film genre & content attracts a wide mainstream audience  Special Effects – ‘spectacle’  High production values  High profile marketing campaign (trailers, billboard, posters, large viral campaigns, TV IV’s, awards etc.) For example: Universal; Paramount (Shutter Island); New Line Cinema (Se7en). Independent Films  Low budget  New, emerging talent  Genre & content more attracted to a niche audience (small or UK etc.)  No expensive special effects – character & narrative drives the film  Production values reflect low budget  Small marketing campaign (viral marketing, website, niche media texts, festivals & awards) For examples: Optimum Releasing (Kill List); Lionsgate (The Holding); Revolver (Kidulthood); Pathe (Adulthood), Films are released by a variety of different film companies, some of which are big, well known names like paramount. and others are smaller like Film4. Smaller companies are more likely to release independent films, like blue ruin and bigger companies will release big films, like The Dark Night.

Film promotion In order to promote our film, we would probably use social media and word of mouth. This is because we cannot afford to run a marketing campaign, even if it were a small one. Social network is a good way to promote a film because it is easy for people to share things and make other people see it, which would help stir up attention for our film. Our film would most likely be shown at small, local cinemas, like the Duke of York’s cinema or maybe an independent film festival. Should our film get distributed, we don’t expect to make much money at all, as it wouldn’t be shown in lots of places that charge people to watch. We could maybe expect to make around £100 if it were to be shown at the Duke of York’s.
