IEEE women In Engineering (WIE) Towards Increasing Women EE Engineers in Region 10 Prepared & presented by: Dr. Tuptim Angkaew on behalf of Prof. M. Haseyama AtIEEE Region 10 Section Meeting March 26, 2006 Chiang Mai, Thailand

Outline Why do we have women In Engineering in IEEE? M ission of WIE W IE Scopes of Interest M embership of WIE A bout WIE Activities W IE Affinity Group H ow many WIE Affinity Groups in 2005 ? S ome appreciation of WIE activities in Region 10 B enefits of Forming a WIE Affinity Group? H ow to form WIE Affinity Groups?

Why do we have women In Engineering in IEEE? Why there are not so many women engineers ? Tradition Expectation of family Maternity ???? ….. Do women engineers become successful in their engineering profession ? Do men engineers understand women engineers in their professional environment? Do EE women engineers join the IEEE as a member, and senior member ? Are there women IEEE Fellow? Can women IEEE members help each other by using IEEE networking platform ?

Many questions…pave the road to form a unit called… “ Women In Engineering (WIE)” in IEEE

Mission of WIE Gather and disseminate information regarding the status of women and initiatives for, by and on behalf of women in engineering and science.

Where is WIE in IEEE organization ? Technical Activities Board WIE, Consultants, GOLD IEEE Societies Regional Activities Board Regions Sections Sub-Sections Student Branches SB Chapters SB Affinity Groups Council ChaptersAffinity Groups Areas

Membership of WIE Bylaw I-107, establish IEEE WIE membership organizational unit. Open to any member of IEEE Requires payment of WIE dues ($25) Waived for Life Members and students.

WIE Scopes of Interest Gather and disseminate information regarding the status of women and initiatives for, by and on behalf of women in engineering and science. Enable mentoring and education programs within IEEE and make available information regarding gender related educational issues which may improve the entry into, and the retention of women in engineering programs. Increase the participation of women within IEEE. Address ways to improve the climate for women in IEEE and the workplace.

About WIE Activities 1.RECOGNIZES women's outstanding achievements in electrical and electronics engineering through IEEE Awards nominationsIEEE Awards 2.ORGANIZES receptions at major technical conferences to enhance networking and to promote membership in WIE 3.PROMOTES IEEE Member Grade advancement for women to the grades of Senior Member and Fellow

About WIE Activities (cont’d) 3.ADVOCATES women in leadership roles in IEEE governance 4.PROVIDES assistance with the formation of new WIE Affinity Groups and supports ongoing activitiesWIE Affinity Groups 5.ADMINISTERS the IEEE Student-Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist (STAR) Program to mentor young women in junior and high schoolsSTAR

WIE AFFINITY GROUPS Affinity Groups provide the opportunity for members to network at the local level. There are now more than 90 WIE Affinity Groups around the world. Two Types Affinity Group for members (Section) Student Branch Affinity Group for students (need Faculty Advisor)

Statistic of Number of WIE AF As recorded on IEEE Website in 2005 USOutside US

Statistic of Number of WIE AF in R10 As recorded on IEEE Website in 2005 Section/Council AF Student Branch AF Australia21 India39 Japan10 Pakistan03 Singapore10 South Korea10 Total813

Some Appreciation of WIE Activities in R10 women In The WIE of the Delhi section is organizing large number of activities for the members of the Delhi section under the theme, men and women alike. The highlight of the activity is the mission to schools.

Some Appreciation of WIE Activities in R10 Kickoff Meeting of WIE Japan Council on July 8, 2005 From Japan Council, WIE Affinity Group

Some Appreciation of WIE Activities in R10 From Japan Council, WIE Affinity Group On September 15, 2005 WIE organized a lecture given by Dr. Claudia Eckert, Director of Fraunhofer Institute of Secure Information Technology on title `Career perspectives for women engineers in Germany

Some Appreciation of WIE Activities in R10 From Japan Council, WIE Affinity Group On November 10, 2005 WIE organized a lecture given by Prof. Janina Marzierska, Head of Institute of Information Sciences and Technology, Massey University, New Zealand, on title `Why I have chosen to study Electronic Engineering - A story of a women Engineer from Warsaw'

Is your Section intending to form WIE Affinity Group?

Benefits of forming WIE AG (1) 1.Opportunity to network on a local level. 2.Free website hosting. 3.Apply for funding for events & activities. 4.Eligible to receive additional funding of US $200 through Regional Activities if Affinity Group meets minimum requirements.

Benefits of forming WIE AG (2) 5.Postings WIE Newsletter and WIE website. 6.Borrow WIE Forum videotape for affinity group meetings. 7.Free WIE membership promotional items for affinity group meetings and events 8.WIE Affinity Group Funding - $200 startup

Forming an Affinity Group 1.Recruit six IEEE members (founding AG) 2.Need someone to be responsible for the AG until the first meeting is held and the Officers are formally appointed 3.Need your Section's Chief Officer approval. 4.After that, you must keep a certain level of activity (at least two activities per year, and a roster of the members.

Affinity Group Required Reporting Technical Chapters and Affinity Groups are required to annually report: 1) meeting activity, 2) financial activity 3) roster of officers 4) roster of members. These reports are necessary for the Chapter/Affinity Group to maintain viability. A Chapter/Affinity Group may be dissolved if reports are not submitted.
