1 Commissions and the Commission of the Year Award Association of Florida Colleges Annual Convention November, 2012 Presented by Dr. Christina Will, VP for Commissions

2 Purpose of a Commission  Provide professional development and networking opportunities for members o Biggest personal benefit/ROI of membership  Serve as AFC information & advocacy resource  Provide leadership experience for Commission Board members 2013 Leadership Conference

3 Commission Requirements  Fill all Commission Board positions  Have at least one Commission Board meeting in addition to the one held at Convention (2 total)  Host at least one professional development conference conference  Award an Exemplary Practice o This is the Commission’s Convention session offering o Other Convention sessions are selected by AFC 2013 Leadership Conference

4 Commission Requirements  Maintain a presence on the AFC web site  Communicate with Commission members  Comply with AFC’s Standing Rule IV as provided in the Leadership Manual Failure to meet Commission requirements for 2 years will place the Commission on provisional status. After 3 years on provisional status the Commission will be decommissioned. 2013 Leadership Conference

6 How to Get It All Done 2013 Leadership Conference  Use the End of Year Report/Commission of the Year Nomination Form as a guide  Make a to-do list for the year

7 To Do: 2013 Leadership Conference Attend the Board of Directors meetings  BOD meeting attendance o Send Chair-elect if you cannot attend  Remaining 2013 meeting dates: o July 10 in Cape Coral – The Membership Conference follows July 10 in Cape Coral o September 13 in Miramar – Tentative date! Convention planning meeting September 13 in Miramar o November 12 in Miramar – Convention follows November 12 in Miramar

8 To Do: Keep the BOD informed  Report required for each BOD meeting o 4 per year plus End of Year Report  Watch for email from Tina Ingramm for written report deadline – week or two before meeting o Email Tina written report for posting to web  At the meeting, give a 2 minute summary of the report o Attendees should print the report from the web  Send me a copy of the report if you or the Chair-elect cannot attend and I will present the summaryme 2013 Leadership Conference

9 To Do: 2013 Leadership Conference Plan the Spring Conference  AFC’s Conference Guidelines AFC’s Conference Guidelines  Joint Spring Conference: May 16-17, 2013 at Lakewood Ranch Campus at State College of Florida, Sarasota o Administration, Communications, Career and Professional Employees, Faculty, Healthcare Education, Institutional Effectiveness-Planning & Professional Development, Instructional Innovation?, Equity?, Learning Resources, Occupational and Workforce Education, and Technology  Student Development: May 14 – 16, 2013 at Pasco-Hernando Student Development  Region Conferences: March 21, April 5, April 12, April 19

10 To Do: 2013 Leadership Conference Coordinate the Exemplary Practice Award  Start now  Application & rubric  Judges  Call for applicants o Contact members, Chairs, Chapter Presidents  Award – Check? Plaque? o Eileen can help if AFC handles Commission finances  Winner presents at Convention

11 To Do: Ensure the Commission has written bylaws, a mission statement, and objectives  Review the Commission’s bylaws annually o Have the bylaws approved by membership  Review the Commission’s mission o Have the mission approved/re-affirmed by membership  Draft annual objectives – Convention Business Meeting o Involve Commission Board members o Tie objectives to Commission and AFC missions o Complete Operational Plan (link on AFC site)  Post all on web 2013 Leadership Conference

13 To Do: 2013 Leadership Conference Plan Commission’s Convention activities  Submit your Exemplary Practice winner to Marsha o Program description, head shot(s), equipment/internet needs o Be prepared to supply laptop & projector  Request time slot for annual Commission meeting  Request a table for fundraising/membership (optional)  All of the above are done via web form  Submit roster of 2014 officers to AFC o Done in-person at Convention  MEET THE DEADLINES

14 To Do: 2013 Leadership Conference Keep members informed, promote the Commission  Email blasts to members o Newsletter o “State of the Commission” email  Commission page and circle on AFC web site o Visible to all o A circle has been made for each Commission  Articles in CurrentCurrent o Submit items to Tina Ingramm o 2013 Deadlines: January 31, May 1, July 21, September 13, November 8

15 To Do: Submit Year End Report/Commission of the Year Award  Form serves as year-end report to BOD  Form is online as a Word document  Covers October 1, 2012 – September 30, 2013 o Get information from current Chair o Check the Commission web site, last Board report  Submit to Awards Committee Chair for consideration no less than 2 weeks before Convention  Winner(s) announced at Convention 2013 Leadership Conference
