Introduction As my Information agency project, I chose the Mooresville Public Library located in Mooresville, NC. I interviewed Nancy Handy, Head of Youth Services and Joe Gutekanst, Circulation Assistant. The mission is to provide the widest possible variety of informational and recreational material for your reading, listening, and viewing pleasure. The Mooresville Public Library services community the area of Mooresville, North Carolina. The Town of Mooresville has a population of 32,711 The Library serves residents of City of Mooresville and the surrounding area. Library cards are available to all North Carolina resident Hours: Sunday: Closed Monday - Thursday: 9 am - 9 pm Friday: 9 am - 6 pm Saturday: 10 am - 3 pm

History The Library remains in the same location for over 100 years at 304 South Main Street in Mooresville Started in 1890 by a group of citizens who donated their own books and gave them a room in the Municipal building. 1899, the Town of Mooresville added the library as a department of the Town. 1939, the library was moved to a home at 304 S. Main St. It was the home of Mrs. Lutell Sherrill Williams who now lived in Winston Salem. With her help, new construction began and was completed in The property was deeded to the Town. 1964, the library expanded with a 900-square-foot addition to house the children’s section. In 2005, the library added a new addition of 30,000 square feet to increase all their services.

Social Media The Library uses Facebook and Tweeter to promote events.

Books alone will not bring patrons in, events draw patrons in. The calendar below is a snap shot of events the library currently offering.

My interview was with Nancy Hardy, Head of Youth Services. Mrs. Hardy believes strongly that programs draw the patrons in. One of the programs she is organizes is the Play Program. This is for ages 0-3 for children and their caregivers. While the small children play, adult education takes place. Community resources are tapped to make presentation for caregivers in areas of interest such as nutrition, wellness care, and freely available social outlets. Paint Party! April 3rd at 2:30 p.m. Come join us for a paint party! Paint using 4 different techniques! For K - 6th graders. RegisterRegister Autism Awareness Activities April 5th at 11:00 a.m. April is Autism awareness month. Come enjoy some fun activities especially for you and your child! For year-olds. RegisterRegister Family Movie: Rise of the Guardians April 5th at 2:00 p.m. Come to the library to watch Rise of the Guardians on the big screen! A great start to the weekend Resume Class Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Get help finding a job, working on your resume, and improving your computer skills. Fees waived based on unemployed or underemployed status.

Promoting Events The Library uses the Town of Mooresville’s Public Information Department to assist them publicity. They use the webpages A Quarterly hand out to patrons and Hand outs to the local schools

Library News Webpage No only does the library use their home page to get the news out, they also have a “library news” page that promotes events, new resources, and services Tired of Waiting for New Releases? The Library now rents select new bestselling books and DVDs for $2. The rental period for books is 14 days and for DVDs is 7 days. “Freedom, Sacrifice, Memory” The Mooresville Public Library presents the State Archives Civil War Photography Exhibit with additional artifacts and items from local sources. Web Presence The Mooresville Public Library has a informative website. The online catalog houses the total collection. The home page list the hours, departments, new addition to the collection and publicizes events. Budget The Mooresville Public Library has an operating budget of $2 million a year. This budget includes all operating cost and collection.

Serving the Community The Mooresville Public Library averages 1000 patrons a day. Children, Teen’s, Young Adults, and Senior Citizens

Special Collections The Mooresville Public Library has a very active Special Collections Department by collection, preserves, and promotes the history and heritage of Mooresville and the surrounding area., Oral History Project: recording older citizens to preserve history. MoGen: The Mooresville Genealogical Project providing information about houses and buildings. HoGen Project: collection local family histories. Focusing on families of Mooresville. Obituary and some genealogical research services to patrons. Classes & workshops on preservation & genealogical research. Community Projects
