How TFD Works How TFD Works

TFDs Initiatives Understanding Deforestation Free Food, Fuel, Fiber and Forests REDD+ Benefit Sharing Genetically Modified Trees Free, Prior, and Informed Consent Investing in Locally Controlled Forestry Forests & Poverty Reduction and Rural Livelihoods Intensively Managed Planted Forests Illegal Logging and Forest Governance Forests and Biodiversity Conservation Forest Certification

TFD’s Process TFD Operates under the Chatham House Rule “Participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed". Ground Rules Use mobiles and computers during breaks No video Pictures OK Use Name Tents

Understanding Deforestation-Free (UDF) “In the newest iteration of the global struggle to reduce deforestation, private sector actors have begun announcing commitments to eliminate deforestation from their supply chains…Although these commitments have been heralded as ground-breaking,…varied definitions, starting dates, implementation methodologies, and systems for verifying progress make it difficult to know how significant a role they will play in stemming forest loss.”

UDF Objectives Examine the operational challenges associated with deforestation-free commitments, including implementation, communication along supply-chains, and monitoring and verification; Shed light on the relationship between land tenure (in)security and conflict, smallholder commodity production, and deforestation-free policies; Capture insights on key challenges, and potential solutions, to ensure that deforestation-free initiatives both deliver positive outcomes in Indonesia and inform policy design and implementation at the global scale.

UDF Process Scoping Dialogue – Hosted by Yale University Indonesian Field Dialogue – Hosted by IBCSD 4.15 Field Dialogues in Latin America (Brazil?) and Africa (Mozambique, Gabon?) in 2015 and early 2016 Wrap up and synthesis by mid 2016

UDF Outcomes Leading research, background papers and summaries for each dialogue TFD Review and Action Recommendations on UDF Collaborations such as the WBCSD, IDH and TFD partnership on Landscape Approaches Promotion of high profile commitments by Consumer Goods Forum companies, TFA 2020 targets and the New York Declaration Review of new initiatives such as HCS (High Carbon Stock) Approach
