SAFER INTERNET DAY

 An award winning not-for-profit company.  Formed with the intention of helping to keep children safe using web technology.  Helping teachers to deliver on-line ‘live’ lessons using the engagelive system.

 E-ngage are offering free sessions of their ‘Social Networking’ activity to schools across the UK.  It is suitable for Years 5 – 8 inclusive.  Sessions are one hour long and start at 09.30, 11.00, & everyday between 1 st – 12 th February, 2010.

 Children, working in teams of three, log onto the engagelive website.  They work through a scenario which is downloaded in segments. They discuss each part and then offer their advice.  On-line subject experts from the E-ngage panel advise the teams in real time on whether they are taking the correct course of action.

 The session is based on a girl called ‘Ellie’ who goes to Huntingbridge school.  She is subjected to increasing problems via her social networking site, mobile phone and in person at school.  The teams will have an opportunity to try out their knowledge of internet safety rules in order to give advice to Ellie to keep her safe.  By doing this they will learn by experience in a secure learning environment.

 The scenario is based on fact.  It was written by an acknowledged internet safety expert, Ruth Harris, a founding member of The Internet Watch Foundation.  All interaction between children & the panel is recorded into Excel for evaluation and child protection purposes.  Teams that show vulnerability through their answers can be easily identified.

 All teams receive individual answers and advice in response to their questions.  Teams cannot message each other.  Any disclosures or other child protection issues will be ‘flagged’ and class teachers can be informed during a session.  All panel members are CRB checked and knowledgeable in the subject area.

 It’s Fun!  Children don’t think they are working but they are. They are reading, communicating with their team, typing in their views, receiving feedback from members of the community who know about the issues.  It is addressing the problems that schools are currently facing as this is the most often requested scenario that we offer.

 When you register you will receive a PDF showing the messages that will be downloaded. The panel answering the questions from students will know their ages and will give appropriate advice. The whole basis of the session is that the downloaded messages start off the interaction between teams and the panel.
