2. 21st Century Learners – a few facts: young people aged 14-17 had the highest rate of internet use at June 2010, with 91% going online weekly* chatting to friends is the main reason 89% of 16-17 year olds use the internet. Social media is also more popular among teenage girls** more than 2 in 3 14-17 year olds consider the internet to be either ‘very' or ‘extremely' important to them** by 16-17 years of age, more than 75% of teenagers consider a mobile phone to be ‘very' or ‘extremely' important to them.** Facebook is the most popular form of social media then YouTube 78% of all young people say that they are most likely to turn to their parents as the main source of information relating to online safety Research commissioned by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)

5. A Digital Footprint Everything you do and post online combines to make your digital footprint or digital reputation. Whatever you share with friends may also be viewed by people you don’t know. And once it’s online, it could be there forever. Ideally a digital footprint should leave a positive impression of behaviour, beliefs, interests and respect for others. Conversations, searches and sites accessed can be checked, monitored and often are archived for later reference. Employers now often search online to check out the profiles of job applicants. Encourage your child to think every time before they post any text, image or video.

7. What are your responsibilities? Monito r regularly …..what is your child doing? Have a plan … what if ?….. be informed and proactive Discuss ICT issues: e.g. cyberbullying, identity theft, grooming, plagiarism If something happens - Do NOT place a ban on the ICT – assure that you will help them to stay connected Advise and encourage your child to report anything that worries them Help your child to develop the skills they need to interact safely and respectfully online Remind them to keep personal details private – use strong passwords Remember it is NOT the ICT that creates the problems, it is people and the way they behave and treat each other!

8. What is cyberbullying? Occurs when the internet, email or mobile phones are used to deliberately and repeatedly engage in hostile behaviour to harm someone – Found to be more common with older children or teens Can have academic, psychological and/or social effects What does it look like? It may be: Abusive texts and emails Unkind or threatening posts (text, images, videos) on any form of social media Imitating or excluding others online Inappropriate image tagging
