LOCATION Where did this event happen? Where is this place? Exact Location: Explain where something is exactly on the map Use lines of Latitude and Longitude Latitude—measures distance north/south of equator Longitude—measured distance east/west of Prime Meridian Relative Location: Explain where something is in relation to something else Example: Tennessee is south of Kentucky

Place Place describes something in terms of both physical and human features Physical Features: Climate, soil, plant life, animal life, bodies of water Human Features: Kinds of houses built, transportation, ways of earning a living, languages, and religion Example: People on the American Frontier built log cabins

Interaction How people adapt to their environment How people change their environment Example: Early Ancient American Hunters learned to plant seeds and grow food crops Learned to irrigate lands 1860, Americans built railroads to help provide transportation What helps people adapt/change their environment today?

Movement Traveling from place to place Exchanging of goods and ideas Example: 1 st people in America were hunters following animal herds People moved from all over the world to settle the Americas American producers ship goods to different countries (computers, cars, food)

Region United by similar physical conditions United by common cultural traits Areas share the same or similar characteristics Example: Great Plains—fairly level land Pacific Coast—rugged mountains, dense forests, ocean shore
