Deconstructing a Text

 To see how the parts fit together to build toward the author’s point.  To analyze the main points and techniques.  To prepare the passage for rhetorical analysis.

 Says Column You summarize the main idea of each paragraph. Do not use quotes. 1-2 sentences will suffice.  Does You explain what each paragraph does. i.e. this shocks the reader, or this brings up a counterargument. There may be more than one item per paragraph here.

 Says Explains how the idea for the book came about and how she became involved.  Does Establishes her background, job, and personality (she is not afraid of a challenge). Gives an example of the type of lifestyle she is used to ($30 lunch).

 Says This type of work/life environment is common in our country.  Does The author lessens her own importance in the situation to point out who she is doing this for. She broadens the opening situation to apply to the entire country.

 Says Shows her life advantages and her goals for the project.  Does Demonstrates her honesty and her advantageous background for future comparison. Displays her personal opinion about poverty and her attitude toward the challenge.

 Get out a piece of loose leaf and the excerpt you read last week.  You must create a Says/Does chart for this passage on the front of your loose leaf.  On the back answer questions 2 and 3 from your chart review guide.
