Ⅰ.Worm-up Ⅱ.Presentation Ⅲ.Summary Ⅳ.Assignments

Task One: Watch a video Task Two: Detailed study of Para 8 Task Three :Oral practice

Watch a video and discuss the topics as follows: 1.What insight can we get from the video? 2.What new light does the video throw on our English learning? key

The video gives us better insight into the relationship between the unfamiliar and the familiar. As shown in the video, when the teacher teaches children the notes “ Do, Re and Mi ”, they are empty, meaningless and dull to the children. Once they are replaced with the words “ Doe — a female deer, Ray — a drop of golden sun and Me — a name I call myself ”, however, they come to be concrete, meaningful and interesting. Now the children are eager to follow the teacher, thus making a good combination of the unknown with the known.

The big problem with our current English learning is that what we have learned from the books, although good in themselves, have little to do with our real life. As our experience proves, anything new, if separated from our old knowledge or our daily life, is more likely to go out of our memory soon. That is why we are still far from free to express ourselves in English despite six years of study. The video suggests that a sound way of learning something unfamiliar is by bridging the gap between the unfamiliar and the familiar
