CHILDHOOD Andrew Jacksons parents moved to America they were Scotch-Irish Andrew was born two years after they arrived, and mother was widowed while pregnant. Jacksons family was very poor at thirteen years old he was captured by the British. They then contracted smallpox his mom was able to get them out but his brother died on on the trip home. ELECTION OF 1824 The election was won by John Quincy Adams. John Adams won with 84 electoral votes but not by the votes did he win he won because the house of representatives chose him. JACKSON AND A POLITICAL CONVENTION After Jackson was elected in 1828 party structures got better and the idea of conventions began to make more sense. There where party conventions on a state level but never a national convention. The rise of Andrew Jackson caused the idea of being elected by a caucus of congressmen to fall out of favor causing Americans to find better ways to elect presidents. URL:

JACKSON ACTIVELY CAMPAIGNING Jackson was one of the first presidents to actually go and try to persuade the people to elect him while other presidents just would say what they want or what they like. URL:

SPOILS SYSTEM Andrew Jackson was the first president to adopt the spoils system on a larger scale in the national government. Although Jackson used the spoils system out of all his eight years in office he didn’t remove more then a total of twenty percent for political reasons. URL:

KITCHEN CABINET When President Andrew Jackson took office in 1829, his official Cabinet was fractured by factional disputes, largely resulting from the fierce rivalry between Vice President John C. Calhoun and Secretary of State Martin Van Buren. The infighting was so pronounced that the Cabinet became virtually ineffectual, and Jackson stopped holding Cabinet meetings.
