Energy and Matter in Ecosystems Chapter 3 Lesson 1 What are Habitats and Niches? SPI’S : Science 7.5.1, 7.5.2, SPI’S: Reading 1.1.15, 1.1.16, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.3.5, 2.3.16, 1.6.1, 1.6.2, 1.6.3, 1.6.4, 1.6.5, 1.7.2, 1.7.3,

Let’s Talk Sharks!!

In Your Science Journals… Draw a picture of an animal in its natural habitat. Be sure to name the animal and the habitat in which it lives.

Let’s discuss your drawing… (Prior knowledge) What animal did you draw Let’s discuss your drawing… (Prior knowledge) What animal did you draw? In what type of habitat does your animal live? What other animals could live in your animal’s habitat?

In this Lesson: I will understand the difference between habitats and niches. I will be able to describe the difference between symbiotic relationships. I will understand what an animal adaptation is.

Vocabulary Adaptation: physical or behavioral trait that helps an organism survive in its habitat.

Habitat: natural environment where an organism lives. Vocabulary Habitat: natural environment where an organism lives.

Niche: role of an organism in its habitat. Vocabulary Niche: role of an organism in its habitat.

Symbiosis: close, long-lasting relationship between species. Vocabulary Symbiosis: close, long-lasting relationship between species.

Who would like to volunteer to start reading P. 86? Let’s Read!!! Who would like to volunteer to start reading P. 86?

Check for understanding… Describe your habitat… What things in your habitat help you survive?

Possible Answers… Electricity Water Shelter Food

Compare and Contrast How is a niche like a position on a sports team?

Answer… An organism plays a specific role or function in its habitat. All of the organisms in a habitat depend on and interact with the other organisms.

Be prepared to discuss it. Let’s Read… PP. 88 and 89. While your classmate is reading, listen for adaptations of the different animals. Be prepared to discuss it.

Adaptations Analyze Look back at the picture on page 9. Use the information on pages 88 and 89 to explain why the jackrabbit’s ears are important to it in its environment.

Answer… Long ears are an adaptation that allow more heat to escape from the jackrabbit’s body, so it does not overheat.

Adaptation An adaptation is any inherited trait that gives an organism an advantage in its environment. Examples: The thick fur and heavy padding of a polar bear help it stay warm in its cold, arctic habitat. The flippers of a sea turtle are adapted for swimming The feet of a desert tortoise are adapted for walking in sand.

Infer Apply what you’ve learned… Based on what you know, write in your science journal why it is important for zoos and animal preserves to provide the correct natural habitat for animals?

Answer… Animals have physical and behavioral adaptations that let them survive in their natural habitats. If an animal is not placed in a habitat like its natural habitat, then it might not survive. (Knoxville Zoo)

Natural Selection Natural Selection is the process in which surviving individuals pass on those characteristics best suited to survival in their environment.

Did you know… Why does the sandpiper have such a long, thin beak?

Answer… According to the theory of natural selection, traits that help an animal survive become more common in the population.

Quick Check: So far I’m learning… To understand the difference between habitats and niches. What animal adaptation is.

Symbiosis = Living Together Three types of symbiosis… (Or three types of things living together) Parasitism Commensalism Mutualism

Parasitism A hookworm takes blood and nutrients from its host. It benefits, and the host is harmed.

Commensalism An elf owl makes its nest in a hole in a cactus. The owl benefits, and the cactus is not affected.

Mutualism Cleaner shrimp eat parasites attached to fish. Both the shrimp and the fish benefit from this relationship.

Let’s Review… Name the 3 types of Symbiosis…

Answer… Parasitism Commensalism Mutualism

Let’s Reflect A natural habitat is the area where an organism lives. It provides everything the organism needs to survive. A niche describes the role of an organism in its habitat.

Reflect… Adaptations are traits that help organisms survive in their habitat. Adaptations can be physical or behavioral.

Reflect… Symbiosis is a close, long-lasting relationship between organisms. The three main types of symbiosis are parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism.

Reflect… Symbiosis is a close, long-lasting relationship between organisms. The three main types of symbiosis are parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism.

Assess Make sure your science journals are turned in for a grade. On two sticky notes, write one thing you learned from this lesson, and one thing you are still a little unsure about. You will be doing a drawing on symbiosis that will be due tomorrow. (Listen carefully for directions)

Symbiosis Drawing Title your picture SYMBIOSIS Make sure you draw 3 pictures. One showing Parasitism, one showing Commensalism, and one showing mutualism. Write a sentence completely explaining each picture, making sure your picture clearly defines each type of symbiosis.

Congrats!! Now You… Way to go!! understand the difference between habitats and niches. are able to describe the difference between symbiotic relationships. understand what an animal adaptation is. Way to go!!
