BELL WORK According to the chart, if the letters on the y- axis represent populations of different ecosystems, which letter would lead to primary succession? Write your question and answer

Journal Page: 83 Title: Ecological Relationships Standard: Interpret relationships, including predation, parasitism, commensalism, mutualism, and competition among organisms EQ: How can I tell the difference between the ecological relationships?

Title your paper “Ecology Quiz” – Number a Sheet of paper 1-10. Write out letter and answer. a.Community b.Producer c.Detritivore d.Consumers e.Decomposers f.Ecosystem g.Population h.Biome i.Organism j.Biosphere 1.A region of Earth with a specific climate and organisms adapted to the particular environment 2.Part of the earth’s surface that includes land, water, and atmosphere where living organisms exist 3.All of the interacting species within a particular ecosystem 4.Heterotrophic organisms that must consume other organisms for survival 5.Living organisms that break down organic matter, making it available to primary producers 6.An organism that feeds on dead or decaying plant or animal remains 7.All of the biotic and abiotic factors within a particular environment 8.A living thing that portrays the basic characteristics of life 9.All of the organisms of one species within a particular ecosystem 10.Autotrophic organisms that undergo photosynthesis

CHAMPS C- No Talking H- Raise your Hand A- Take notes M- Stay in your seat at all times, raise your hand to get up at all P- Take notes and raise your hand to ask questions if you need to.

Remember: Resources are things organisms need to survive. Resources can be biotic. Resources can be abiotic.

Adaptations and available resources affect the relationships between organisms in an ecosystem.

The three types of community interactions that can affect an ecosystem are: Competition Predation Symbiosis

Competition: when organisms attempt to use the same ecological resource

Organisms can compete for any resource: Water Food Light Mates Habitats Remember that resources are limited!

Predation: one organism captures and feeds on another organism

Predator: kills and eats another

Prey: gets eaten

Both predator and prey affect the other’s population. When the predator population goes UP, the prey population will go DOWN ( because they’re being eaten ). When the prey population goes DOWN, eventually the predator population will go back DOWN ( because they’re running out of food ). When the predator population goes DOWN, eventually the prey population will go back UP ( because they’re not being eaten as often ). When the prey population goes UP, eventually the predator population will go back UP ( because there is more food available ).

Symbiosis: Any relationship in which two species live closely together Symbiosis literally means “living together”. There are three symbiotic relationships in nature:

Mutualism: both species benefit from the relationship

Commensalism: one organism benefits while the other is neither helped nor harmed =I

Parasitism: one organism lives on or in another organism and harms it One is helped, one is harmed 

Parasite: the organism invading the other; gets its nutrients from the host Elephantiasis tropica- blocks the lymph vessels Host: the organism invaded by the parasite

Eco Relationships “Instas” Fold your paper so you create 4 boxes. In each box, draw an “insta” for each type of ecological relationship (Think about how Instagram works…the picture should describe the relationships) Include a caption that also describes the relationship #BiologyRocks #ImHungry #ParasitesRUs

#SquadGoals #Parasitism Mr. Dickerman 9 Million Likes

Examples of Relationships: In the following clips identify the relationship that is shown 3 kinds of symbiosis : Clownfish/Anemone, Fish lice, Cleaner Fish, Shark/Remora 3 kinds of symbiosis Cleaner Fish and Tiger Groupers Nile Crocodile Rhino and bird (symbiotic song) Bird and Capybara & Hippo and Bird Bird and Capybara Bonus: 5 most horrible parasites5 most horrible parasites
