Unit 5 Week 1 Introducing Adjectives

Adjectives

DAY 1  An adjective describes a person, place, thing, or idea. Adjectives modify nouns or pronouns.  An adjective may tell what kind, (blue car), which one (this house), or how many (few people, two cats).  A predicate adjective follows a linking verb and tells about the subject of a sentence. The truck’s tire is flat.  A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun. I visited Italy and saw many works of Italian art.

Order of Adjectives

DAY 2  Adjectives follow a particular order.  Opinion adjectives come before size adjectives. Ex. Her cute little dog.  Size adjectives come before age adjectives. Ex. Her cute little old dog.  Age adjectives come before color adjectives. Ex. Her cute little old brown dog.  Color adjectives come before material adjectives. Ex. Her cute little old brown furry dog.  Try to use no more than three adjectives to describe. Ex. Her cute little brown dog.

Mechanics and Usage: Capitalizing Proper Nouns and Adjectives

DAY 2  A proper noun names a specific person, place, or thing, and it always should be capitalized.  Proper adjectives always should be capitalized too. Many proper adjectives describe where someone or something is from: Mexican music. They may refer to languages, races, or nationalities.  Some proper adjectives describe a time period or holiday: Renaissance art, Thanksgiving dinner, Memorial Day parade.
