What is a drug Drug – is a substance other than food that changes the structure or function of the body or mind Over the counter – Drugs that can be found of the shelves of local pharmacy or grocery stores. Prescription drugs – drugs that can be legally obtained with doctors permission

Stimulants Stimulants – drug that speeds up the body's functions Amphetamines - “speed, crystal meth” Caffeine Cocaine- “snow, blow, coke”

Depressants Depressant - Drugs that slow down the body’s function and reactions, including heart and breathing rates Tranquilizers and barbiturates – sometimes prescribed by doctor’s to help treat anxiety Alcohol Valium Xanax Prozac

Marijuana Affects people differently – could cause effects of stimulant/depressant “Weed” “Bud” “Pot” Over time can cause the same long term effects as tobacco, especially lung damage

Hallucinogens and/or Club Drugs Club Drugs – Illegal drugs that are found mostly in night-clubs and raves Hallucinogens – Drugs that distort moods, thoughts, and senses. Often made in home laboratories – Never know what’s inside “X” “Molly” “Roofies” – Date rape drug

Narcotics Narcotics – Drugs that get rid of pain and dull the senses. Morphine Codeine Heroin

Inhalants Inhalant – the vapors of chemicals that are sniffed or inhaled to get a “high.” Household products with chemicals in them Cleaning supplies Paint Can cause permanent damage or even death due to chemical interactions in her brain

Steroids Steroid – A drug that contains unnatural forms of human growth hormones Mostly include testosterone to increase muscle growth Because steroids include “replicated” versions of testosterone, there can be negative side effects due to an imbalance in testosterone level Breast development, decrease in size of testicles, decreased sperm levels, become infertile or impotent, acne, hair loss, deepened voice, extreme moods swings, heart issues, etc.
