Spain (& CBUC) country report to 7th SELL Meetting Madrid, 16/

Activities report Spain & the Big Deal 2.BeCyT 3.CBUC -Licensing -E-journals usage study -OA activities -New software implementation

Spain & the Big Deal 5 ‘real’ (?) consortia: Andalucía, Castilla – León, Cataluña, Galicia, Madrid 1 ‘alike’ consortium: CSIC 2 ‘buying clubs’ Several virtual consortia (EBSCO or Swets driven) 1 Spanish association of all academic universities (CRUE section)

BeCyT Joint financing Core collection oriented -Elsevier, Springer/Kluwer, Blackwell/Wiley, Taylor&Francis, Nature, Sage, Science No money (by now) A chance or a threat? -Invest money in price increases? -No more content for those who already have a lot -“Small territories” consortial deals in danger

CBUC-Digital Library of Catalonia Renewals done (Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Emerald): conditions have usually been fair Some new deals in 2006 (ALPSP, Elsevier backfiles, OUP Premium) Extension of our IEEEXplore deal to 5 non-CBUC universities But now... “stand by” situation: -Same allocation costs formula (+3% increase; CBUC pays the difference to reach the real annual price increase) -New money, but no clear ideas of what to buy next -Learning oriented e-resources? -New kinds of members: research centres, hospitals, public & school libraries...?

Digital Library of Catalonia usage studies JAL article on user and users of e-journals at Catalan universities (preprint) E-journals usage at Catalan universities (in Catalan) Update of a report done in 2004 and published in D-Lib Both reports have been conducted by the School of Librarianship (Barcelona Univ.)

Major conclusions Permanent increase in usage, both in previously subscribed e-journals and not previously subscribed Usage data is related to scientific production data in each university Consortial gain: 60,54% of downloads belong to non previously subscribed e-journals High dispersion degree in usage: 30-35% of titles are needed to reach 80% of articles

OA & IR activities More than e-theses: universities (4 no-CBUC) More than e-prints: institutions (2 no-CBUC) More than 120 journals: institutions (9 no-CBUC) More than images: institutions (2 no-CBUC) Cooperative repository for educational materials developed in the Catalan universities... under construction

New software implementation Selected products at the tender (2005): -ILS: Corinthian, from SirsiDynix -Digital library: SFX and MetaLib, from ExLibris Implementation (2006): -SFX and MetaLib: “working” -Corinthian: delays, lack of communication from vendor…(to be continued)

10 (first) years of CBUC history!!! Our motto: 9x10 9 programs in 10 years but... in Catalan this can also be read as “Don’t lose it!” (and our little red boxes can be of help)

Pleased to help... CBUC Lluís Anglada Núria Comellas
