2 Slide 2 What is a digital library?  A digital library is a focused collection of digital objects that can include text and audio/video materials stored in electronic media along with means for storing, organizing, and retrieving the files and media contained within.  Local resources Library management systems Local digitized collections  External resources Online publishers/aggregators Information retrieval systems Document delivery systems

3 Slide 3 What is DL consortium?  A DL consortium is a group of member institutions who partner to access external electronic resources, share digital content internally, and combine expertise and technology.  Why do we need a DL consortium? Cost-sharing Better negotiation with publishers Sharing digital publishing and archiving

7 Slide 7 DL Investment Study under HEQEP (2010)  Survey of the range of printed and digital resources utilized by the university libraries.  27 public and 13 private universities responded to the survey. Lack of print resources and journal subscription Lack of access to digital resources and digitization projects  User survey: Users are not generally satisfied with the current level of university subscribed e-resources. Difficulties includes limited number of titles, limited access to back issues, inability to access from home, limited access to computers and slow download speed
