Point of View

Bell work Sentence 1: We are building up our new ideals by utilizing the work of our ancestors, even where we condemn it, and so it will be in the future. Sentence 2: We form our beliefs by learning from our ancestors, even when we don’t agree with them; and it will be the same for our descendants. Which explanation below shows the relationship between ancestor and descendant as used in the above contexts? Sentence 1: Whatever our generation may achieve will attain in course of time that venerable aspect that will lay in chains the minds of our successors, and it will require new efforts to free a future generation of the shackles that we are forging. Sentence 2: Our achievements will in time become traditions that will limit the thinking of our descendants, and it will take work to find new ways to free a future generation of the restrictions of our beliefs.

What is point of view? Point of view is the view point in which a story is being told.

1st person POV the narrator (speaker) is a character in the story who reveals his or her experiences, thoughts, and feelings. narrator is limited to what he or she observes directly or has been told by other characters.

2nd person POV The narrator is demanding or making it imperative that YOU following his/her directives.

3rd person POV the narrator (speaker) is someone outside the story who tells about the characters and actions in the story.

3rd Person Limited a narrator outside the story who knows only the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of one character. The story is told from that one character’s perspective.

3rd Person Objective a narrator outside the story who gives only a factual account of the events. The narrator only knows what can be observed; therefore, the objective point of view does not know the thoughts or feelings except if they are expressed.

3rd Person Omniscient point of view has a narrator outside the story who knows everything about all of the characters in the story. The omniscient narrator knows what everyone does, says, thinks, or feels

Something to remember… 1st person POV will use 1st person pronouns. I, me, my, mine, myself 2nd person POV will use 2nd person pronouns. You, your, yours 3rd person POV will use 3rd person pronouns. His, her, hers, it, its, himself, herself

One last thing… The effects of Changing Point of View From 3rd person to 1st person- can make the text more personal From 1st to 3rd- can make the text less personal and more objective From 3rd to 2nd- can make text more informal or more persuasive From 3 person limited or objective to 3rd omniscient- can make the text more informative.
