1 Point of View

2 Narrative a spoken or written account of connected events AKA: a STORY

3 Point of View Point of View: the vantage point through which a story is told Created by a writer’s choice of narrator Narrator: the voice that tells the story Stories/narratives are told through various points of views Each point of view affects the understanding of characters and events of a story (I will ask you why later…so keep that in mind as I go through each type of point of view)

4 First-Person In this type of point of view the narrator is:
A main character Uses pronouns such as I or me Shares his or her thoughts/feelings about other characters or events of the story Does NOT know the thoughts/feelings/opinions of other characters

5

6 Third-Person Limited In this type of point of view the narrator is:
Not a character in the story but an outside observer Zooms in on the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of one character Does NOT reveal thoughts, feelings, and opinions of other characters Tells his or her story Characters may reveal feelings through actions and/or dialogue

7

8 Third-Person Omniscient
In this type of point of view the narrator: Is not a character in the story but an outside observer Tells his or her story but… Is “all-knowing”, which means that he or she has access to the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of ALL of the characters

9

10 Now, why would point of view affect the understanding of characters and events of a story?…
