2 Point of View (POV) point of view – the perspective from whom is narrating (telling) a text –main 3 types –3 subtypes –effect on multiple texts Use your pronoun chart from your pronoun ambiguity notes to help determine point of view.

3 1 st -person POV the “I” POV uses pronouns like I, me, my, etc. text is narrated by the narrator as the main character in the text

4 2 nd -Person POV uses pronouns like you to address the reader you, the reader, become the main character

5 3 rd -person POV uses pronouns like he, she, and it narrator is outside of the story and tells what happens to others

6 3 rd -person POV Can be broken down further into 3 subtypes 3 rd - person POV omniscient limited objective

7 3 rd -person Omniscient POV “all-knowing” / God-like tells what many different characters think

8 3 rd -person Limited POV limited to the thoughts of only one of the characters

9 3 rd -person Objective POV not quite all- knowing or God-like narrator is like a “fly on the wall” only reports what can be seen or heard of the characters narrator does not know their thoughts

10 Effects of Changing POVs 1st person = more personal 2 nd person = less formal / more persuasive 3 rd person = less personal / more objective omniscient = more objective limited = less informative / less truthful omniscient = more informative / more truthful
