1 Point of View 8th Grade language arts

2 what is point of view in literature?
Different characters can tell the same events in different ways. There are 5 points of view that we will focus on in our reading.

3 First Person A character in the story is the narrator.
Uses pronouns like I, we, our, my, me Example: “The Tell Tale Heart”

4 Second Person The narrator tells the story to someone else using words like “you.”

5 Third Person The story is being told by someone not in the story.
Uses pronouns like they, he, she, their Example: The Monkey’s Paw

6 Third Person Omniscient
The narrator knows all the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters in the story. God-like Example: The Secret Garden

7 Third Person limited The story adheres to one character’s perspective.
The narrator knows all things about this character, but ONLY this character. Example: The Hunger Games

8 Let’s Practice With your group, come up with an example for each type of point of view. When you finish, read the opening paragraph of “The Tell Tale Heart” and rewrite it another point of view (third person, second person, etc.)
